Буква R английского алфавита означает на письме согласный звук, но несмотря на это она может менять звучание некоторых гласных букв и даже слогов.
Эта буква занимает четвертое место по частоте использования в английском языке. В русском варианте этот звук похож на русский «р», но звучит более мягко.
Буква R английского алфавита в обычном варианте звучит как [ a: ] или [ a:r ]. Русскими знаками эту транскрипцию можно записать как [ ар ].
Произношение:
В словах буква читается в нескольких случаях:
- Перед гласной буквой, которая образует слог: library — библиотека.
- В случае удвоения: mirror – зеркало. В этом слове двойная rr читается, а одиночная на конце слова – нет.
- Если r удваивается при присоединении окончания ing. То звук гласной остается прежним, а r начинает произноситься: blur, blurring — пачкать, пачкающийся.
- Если буква стоит на конце слова и является не читающейся, а следующее слово начинается с гласной – то буква как бы появляется, вернее, начинает читаться: for a test для тестирования.
В определенных случаях буква не читается вообще:
- На конце слова после гласной: four – четыре.
- Перед буквой e, которая не читается: more – больше.
- Перед согласным звуком: girl – девушка.
В американском варианте английского языка буква r читается всегда, но звук при этом будет редуцированным, то есть не таким явным.
Интересно! Буква R ведет свою историю с древнеегипетского алфавита, где она изображалась иероглифом головы человека, повернутой влево. Так она перекочевала в греческий алфавит, но греки ее развернули обратно для удобства письма, а также приставили к ней ножку – R. В таком виде она попала в английский алфавит. Римляне упростили букву, убрав ножку. Это написание скопировали славянские племена – Р.
